{"id":613,"date":"2012-05-17T13:00:47","date_gmt":"2012-05-17T13:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/prescription4fitness.com\/blog\/?p=613"},"modified":"2014-04-27T11:57:34","modified_gmt":"2014-04-27T11:57:34","slug":"aerial-yoga-for-release-therapy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pilates4fitness.com\/site\/aerial-yoga-for-release-therapy\/","title":{"rendered":"Aerial Yoga for Release Therapy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I published a post about three years ago when I first met this amazing artist, performer, dancer, acrobat, and yoga instructor, <a title=\"Michelle Dortignac\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aerialacrobat.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Michelle Dortignac<\/a>, having been introduced to another fabulous way to bend, shape, lift and work the body with <a title=\"Unnata Aerial Yoga\" href=\"http:\/\/aerialyoga.com\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">Aerial Yoga.<\/a>\u00a0 Her practice and business has expanded greatly and as I still practice yoga, I remain a student of finding the gentle way to release to the pull of gravity with suspension and aerial yoga.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As with most of my teachers, (of every discipline) she kept telling me too slow down find and &#8220;quiet the breath&#8221; as the work enveloped me with utter joy!\u00a0 I got so carried away with the freedom of body movement, I gobbled up the first 30-45 minutes like a glutton.\u00a0 Toward the end of the 90 minutes, I kinda got her point and &#8220;let go to release&#8221; my body to the gravity pull and my breath actually did slow down and went inside.<\/p>\n<p>The next two days I felt my body, particularly the lines of my torso, in a way I have not experienced in sometime.\u00a0 It was GREAAAAAT!<\/p>\n<p>Using a soft trapeze, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aerialyoga.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Aerial Yoga<\/a> combines basic yoga postures with the miracles of gravity. The result is a new practice that encourages proper alignment by strengthening shoulder and core ab muscles and increasing shoulder and spinal flexibility\u2014all without strain or pain.\u00a0 Like partner yoga or any other type of assist, the hammock-like aerial apparatus counteracts the affects of gravity, which is a great way to relieve compression and elongate your spine.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4777\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4777\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4777 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pilates4fitness.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/aerial-yoga-682x1024.jpg\" alt=\"aerial yoga\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pilates4fitness.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/aerial-yoga-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/www.pilates4fitness.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/aerial-yoga-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.pilates4fitness.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/aerial-yoga.jpg 736w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4777\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Unata Yoga at Sacred Sounds Yoga, NYC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She says in a current May 2012 article published in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aerialyoga.com\/aypress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/article.pdf\">American Fitness<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0&#8220;some people think that this practice aims to replace traditional yoga. Rather, it\u2019s trying to enhance a traditional practice, she clarified. Most people are surprised to find we practice floor yoga asanas in class in addition to using the hammock prop. The air and the floor are not mutually exclusive \u2013 they are complements to teach other. Yin and Yang.
