Pilates & Yoga for Me!

On the eve of the HotYoga MeetUp I am orchestrating, (scheduled for Saturday, January 21st at 2:30pm, HotYogaNJ) Brooke Silar, tweeted  a good article that she called “more fodder in the Yoga vs. Pilates ‘debate’” and then went on to state, two great tastes that taste great together, why choose.”  I whole-heartedly agreed, re-tweeted the post and found it ironic that the very conversation was held with a male client during our reformer workout earlier in the day.  He, btw, is coming to the HotYoga Meet Up!

At this juncture in life and certainly in all of our quests for health and flexibility, there is certainly enough time in the week to do more than one thing, own it and be refined by it.

Going Yellow for Seven Days

Week One of 2012 done and with it, my 30-day nutrient juice supplement is also complete!  What a winning choice that has been.  My apologies if I sound like a darn commercial, it’s just that when I really like something, I tend to talk about it with the fervor of a zealot.  When it pertains to health and fitness related items, I am a zealot for the pure things.   The fresh press juices I have found (and now have delivered to the studio) are just that, simple pure goodness.

Day 6: Pure Press Green with Sweetness

Whoa!  Hit the jackpot.  For the past five days, I have had about 16 oz of pure green juice, once a day.  The combo is celery, spinach, kale, cucumber, romaine, parsley.   Now, on the sixth day, the Vitamin C and anti-oxidants are added with apple, lemon and ginger for a slightly sweeter taste.  I didn’t approach the green supplement to my diet as a cleanse, but as a vitamin boost and charge for my batteries during the cold season.  Turns out it feels like the effect of both.  Big winning jackpot!

Pure Press Green

It is my second day. All Greens this morning before the AM classes. Beyond Quality or beQuJuice to be exact. In short, a new LinkedIn friend (who happens to be the pres and chief operating principle of the company) business profile led me to the website which led me to purchase the product.

I ordered on Thursday the 24 bottle All Greens pack; six bottles per week for a month supply of nutrient rich, hydraulically pressed vegetables. I met my idea of clean, quick and easy because I don’t have to clean out the Acme juicer filter and am now more likely to drink “green” regularly.

Stretching for Muscle Length

The benefits of stretching are as good for the ordinary person as they are for the star athlete. All of our muscles tighten and shorten over time with activities as gentle as sitting or as vigorous as speed skating.  For this reason, it is crucial and recommended to regularly stretch and  lengthen shortened muscles to their best resting position. Tight muscles influence the movement (or lack thereof) of the lower back and pelvis and can cause pain, especially when the tightness is asymmetrical (or pulling on one side of the body.)  Additionally, a shortened muscle affects the joints and ligaments around the muscle. This can eventually lead to recurring injuries, poor posture, and pain.

Fall Workout Planning

It’s colder.  It already snowed and now you need gloves to go outside and walk!  The marathon is over and you might be inspired to do something a little extra just to keep your slip from bunching up all under that skirt before the holiday party.

You could sign up with me and follow my planned workout for tightening up five (5) pounds by the end of the month.  It won’t involve crazy stuff, just regular and consistent stuff and you can be accountable to yourself with a couple of online tools I am also using to keep track and perspective.

Working It Thru the Fall

As the weather cools down, I am already noticing  a number of clients/students coming into the studio with aches and pains as a result of the weather changes.  It becomes much harder to stretch, walk and run without the sun, for sure.  However, the need to do so regularly and consistently remains the same.  Here are a few thoughts about how to keep moving and exercising in your busy, fall schedule.

First Year Anniversary

Whoa! Proud to say the studio has covered a lot of ground in the last 365 days! September 25th marked the anniversary date of opening the studio officially.  The studio classes were completely full for the entire weekend and all were excited about sweating and breathing and moving with Pilates!

One thing this year has taught me to remember, is the serenity prayer.  There are a lot of things outside of our control and a few critical pieces well within our reach.  A plaque with the prayer hung on my mother’s kitchen wall, for years.  It was under the calendar and thus visible everyday.

Inspiration for Perspiration

As the summer draws to a close in the next few weeks, it will become easier to hide under clothing and harder to drag yourself outside.  May these two disparate pieces of news provide a little inspiration for your perspiration over the course of the coming months.  One source is the NYTimes Sports article about a young double amputee qualifying for the Olympics 4X4 with a time of 45.07.  The other source is from a Facebook friend that boldly told friends of her “bucket list” plan to join a gym and journey to optimum fitness by her 60th birthday, as a gift to herself.

Disparate sources of inspiration but rallying cries nonetheless for the rest of  us that sit in between the two ends.  We have two able-bodied limbs.  Can put two shoes on the feet.  Most of us are a far cry from even thinking about bucket lists.  Yet, all of us look for and need from time to time, a little motivation to move.

TRX Compliments Pilates Mat Work

Several students have recently commented on their delight and experience with the varied TRX workouts they are using to compliment their Pilates Mat work in the studio. Particularly the challenge, flow and energy of the workout in the new schedule offers of TRX Mat Flow and TRX Strength4Group.

Sheri, a 2x week private/semi-private student sent a text after her first Saturday AM class, “I really liked the TRX Strength4Group class. It was different and challenging and seems like a really nice compliment to my regular reformer work.”
